Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Marianas' newly appointed Marine Corps Activity Guam (MCAG) Public Works Officer (PWO) Lt. Jonathan Kim credits his diverse culture as reason for a successful career.

During Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, NAVFAC Marianas applauds Kim for his dedication and service to the Navy and nation.

Kim, a Civil Engineer Corps officer, reflects on the opportunity his grandparents took moving to the U.S. mainland from Korea when his parents were in their teens. "We should remember where we come from, our heritage," he said. "As time passes, we adapt to things. Despite all, we should remember that where we are today is because of the forethought of our grandparents and parents made."

Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) has been a part of Kim's life since he was a toddler. His father took a job with NAVFAC that moved Kim and his family from Maryland to Japan - twice. Today, Kim is eight years into a successful career as a CEC officer with NAVFAC.

Demonstrating the value the Navy places on diversity helps it attract the most capable people of all backgrounds, said Kim, who speaks Japanese fluently and Korean at an elementary level. In addition, "that diversity opens up the Navy to connect with and appreciate the contributions of other people and countries," he said. "This expands the Navy's knowledge and understanding."

As the MCAG PWO, Kim leads the Public Works Department (PWD) in providing engineering and planning services for the Marine Corps relocation to Guam.

"While I recently assumed this position, I expect that by listening and appreciating different communication styles, and adapting to the workload and team dynamics, we will be successful in completing our mission."

"Diversity in our workplace is appreciated and celebrated," said Office in Charge of Construction for Marine Corps Marianas (OICC MCM) Executive Officer Cmdr. Paul Chan. "Whether it's Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month or another cultural celebration, it's extremely important for the Navy to encourage and embrace the diverse cultural backgrounds of our workforce."

Chan said it is through this diversity that the team is able to leverage different thoughts and ideas for improved strategies in approaching and resolving challenges.

NAVFAC Marianas joins the rest of the Navy and nation in honoring the contributions of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders throughout the month of May.
