The Unified Command is offering residents in the affected neighborhoods the option to temporarily relocate, on a voluntary basis, while the clean-up efforts continue. Door-to-door notifications are being conducted and coordination with those families seeking this support began today.

During Monday's informational meeting with residents, several families expressed concern about their health and how the odor of fuel had impacted them. "We've heard your concerns and the safety of our neighbors is our highest priority," said Capt. Rich Meadows, Naval Air Station Oceana commanding officer. "Working with the Unified Command, we will help those wanting to temporarily relocate and continue to take steps to assist our neighbors."

Air quality readings in the affected neighborhoods were initially between 0 and 4 ppm but were followed with an immediate downward trend.

The most recent Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) air quality readings were 0 ppm.

The U.S. Navy continues to work with the U.S. Coast Guard, City of Virginia Beach, the Virginia Department of Emergency Management, the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality, Virginia Beach Animal Control, U.S. Navy Natural Resources, Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services, U.S. Department of Agriculture-APHIS-Wildlife Services, USDA, VDH, Tri-State Bird Rescue & Research, Inc., and HEPACO.

The Unified Command expects clean-up efforts to continue through the remainder of this week. We are committed to the entire clean-up process. The community will be updated regularly as this work progresses.

We urge the public to contact us with any continued reports, updates or concerns.
