The Unified Command team of federal, state and local partners are continuing to work cleanup operations from Thursday's spill of 94,000 gallons of jet fuel at Naval Air Station Oceana and the area adjacent to the spill in Virginia Beach.

"We have almost completed our cleanup efforts on London Bridge Road, moved the heavy equipment, and were able to work with the City to open the roadway to normal traffic late yesterday evening," Capt. Rich Meadows, commander of the naval air station. "We are now concentrating cleanup efforts to the western side of London Bridge Road and into the Arrowfield Road area."

As the weather warms, the odor may be more noticeable as the fuel evaporates. Crews have been monitoring the air quality levels since the event and will continue to record air quality to ensure it stays within acceptable levels, Meadows says.

"We want to thank the public for their patience during the emergency cleanup," said Coast Guard Capt. Kevin Carroll.

Residents with questions and concerns are invited to attend tonight's open house meeting, 5:00-7:00 p.m., to be held at the London Bridge Baptist Church, 2460 Potters Road, in Virginia Beach. Experts from the various city, state, and federal agencies will be available at the meeting to speak with community members.

The U.S. Navy continues to work with the U.S. Coast Guard, City of Virginia Beach, the Virginia Department of Emergency Management, the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality, Virginia Beach Animal Control, U.S. Navy Natural Resources, Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services, U.S. Department of Agriculture-APHIS-Wildlife Services, USDA, VDH, Tri-State Bird Rescue & Research, Inc., and HEPACO.

The cause of the spill remains under investigation.
