Members of the U.S. and Italian civilian, military and veteran communities came together for a Memorial Day ceremony and World War I centennial commemoration at the Sicily-Rome American Cemetery in Nettuno, Italy, May 28.

U.S. and Italian military personnel, the Fanfara Carabinieri, U.S. Naval Forces Europe Band, and members of the public attended the ceremony which honored those who fought for peace, stability and order in Europe a century ago.

During the ceremony, Rear Adm. Daryl L. Caudle, Deputy Commander, U.S. 6th Fleet spoke about the sacrifice and heroism between both the Italian and U.S. service members.

"Today, during this Memorial Day service, we not only remember these brave men and courageous women, who left their homes and families to fight for freedom in places like Nettuno, and the beaches of Anzio just to the west, but also our young Italian brothers and sisters who bravely fought for a cause greater than themselves," said Caudle. "This Memorial Day is especially meaningful because 2017 marks the centennial of U.S. entry into World War I, where we fought alongside Italy, in our country's first true global campaign."

Following the ceremony, U.S. and Italian dignitaries laid a wreath to honor the selfless service and sacrifices of the brave men and women who fought for peace, liberty and stability in Europe.

U.S. 6th Fleet, headquartered in Naples, Italy, conducts the full range of maritime security operations and theater security cooperation missions in concert with coalition, joint, interagency, and other parties in order to advance security and stability in Europe and Africa.
