The Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Ross (DDG 71) departed Trondheim, Norway, July 8, 2017, after completing a scheduled port visit to enhance U.S.-Norway relations as the two nations work towards a stable and secure Europe.

Cmdr. Bryan Gallo, commanding officer, and Cmdr. David Coles, executive officer, met with Trondheim's mayor and deputy chief of police during the ship's visit. Members of the Norwegian Home Guard and Trondheim police force helped provide security for the ship while in port.

"The Norwegian Home Guard and Trondheim Police seamlessly integrated with the ship's force and provided a high level of security throughout our port visit," said Lt. Harry Gregory, anti-terrorism officer. "They were some of the most capable and professional security forces we've worked with."

During the port visit Sailors aboard the Ross had the opportunity to experience the host nation's culture and witness a day without the sun setting.

"The people of Trondheim were incredibly hospitable and proud to share their rich history with us," said Ensign Nicholas L. McGrath, electrical officer. "It was a privilege to see such a beautiful country while the sun was up for 24 hours of the day."

The ship's presence in the U.S. 6th Fleet area of operations is a demonstration of our continued commitment to the collective security and NATO under Operation Atlantic Resolve.

USS Ross departed Naval Station Rota, Spain, for the ship's fifth patrol in the U.S 6th Fleet area of operations, April 3rd, 2017.

Ross (DDG 71), forward deployed to Rota, is on a routine deployment conducting naval operations with allies and partners in the U.S. 6th Fleet area of operations in order to advance security and stability in Europe.

U.S. 6th Fleet, headquartered in Naples, Italy, conducts the full spectrum of joint and naval operations, often in concert with allied, joint, and interagency partners, in order to advance U.S. national interests and security and stability in Europe and Africa.
