Navy Expeditionary Logistics Support Group (NAVELSG), Williamsburg, Vairginia, conducted a Management Assessment Visit (MAV) with Navy Cargo Handling Battalion (NCHB) 14 on Port Hueneme Naval Base, California, July 7-9.

The assessment consisted of inspections on the expeditionary warfare program, administrative department, operations, safety, training, career counselor, security and more.

"We are very proud of the work we have done and this assessment is challenging but awesome for us," said NCHB 14 Command Master Chief Jeff Canter. "It helps us identify deficiencies within the command and lets us know how we can do things better because we're always striving for excellence in everything we do. Being on the West Coast, it's also an opportunity for the command to interact with our [headquarters] counterparts face-to-face to get tips, strategies and streamline standard operating procedures."

MAVs are conducted every two years and can fall in any one of the three mobilization phases pending where they are in their rotation. NCHBs are in a constant phase rotation to maintain a constant state of readiness starting with Basic Phase, consisting of professional development, Advanced Phase, which NCHB-14 is currently in, and the Maintenance Phase, the final phase prior to deploying.

"With the impending mobilization of some of our shipmates, our state of readiness is paramount and needs to stay at the standard we expect," said Cmdr. Daniel Foster, NCHB 14 commanding officer. "Keeping up with our high levels of qualifications and program effectiveness greatly assists us in achieving this, and the MAV is exactly that. It's an inspection to help keep us on track for future success."

NCHB 14's mission is to deliver world-wide expeditionary logistics capabilities through ocean, ordnance and air cargo handling, fuel terminal distribution and marshaling yard operations critical for peacekeeping, crisis response, humanitarian, and combat service support missions.
