The Navy announced its nominee for the 2017 Spirit of Hope Award from a pool of fleet-wide command submissions, Friday.

Mr. Jim Marshall, a retired Navy Chief, is being recognized for his work on improving the quality of life for the military and their families in the greater Cheyenne Wyoming community for over a decade.

Serving as a Navy ambassador to the community, Marshall spearheaded multiple events that helped strengthen the bond between the Navy and the people of Wyoming. Over the last year, he coordinated the Cheyenne Navy Birthday Ball, the Toys for Tots Drive, and other Fleet Reserve Association events tied to Cheyenne Frontier Days. He also oversaw the relocation of a 42-foot decommissioned U.S. Navy submarine periscope from Rhode Island to Cheyenne for installment through the roof of the new Grand Conservatory building at the City of Cheyenne's Botanic Gardens.

Lt. Cmdr. Christopher Tidwell, Commanding Officer, Navy Operational Support Center (NOSC) Cheyenne, nominated Marshall.

"He is truly an outstanding example for all to emulate," said Tidwell. "His continued patriotism, dedication to the community, and giving to others is incredibly admirable."

Tidwell informed Marshall of his award at the historic Cheyenne Depot Square during a Pancake Flip event put on by the local Kiwanis Club this week. This event is a Civil Defense drill that feeds thousands and is conducted three times during the week of Frontier Days.

Marshall will be presented his award at a joint ceremony honoring awardees from all services at the Pentagon this October.

The Spirit of Hope Award is the namesake award for comedian and actor Bob Hope, who was renowned for his patriotism and his participation and contributions to United Service Organization tours. The Award was established in 1997 and is given to armed forces members, entertainers, other distinguished Americans and organizations nominated for patriotism and service that imitates his legacy.
