The Norfolk Tides hosted the 10th annual Navy Night at Harbor Park in Norfolk, Aug. 5, to pay respect to the men and women of the U.S. Navy.

The night began with opening pitches simultaneously thrown by Cryptologic Technician (Technical) 1st Class Karyn Konrad, guided-missile cruiser USS Normandy (CG 60) Sailor of the Year; Builder 1st Class Adam Perry, Underwater Construction Team 1 Sailor of the Year; and Ryan Muldez, a Gold Star family member.

"Navy Night makes me very proud to be in the Navy and to be a part of the Norfolk community," said Konrad. "It was impressive to see how big of a crowd came out."

Before the Tides took the field, Rear Adm. Jack Scorby, commander, Navy Region Mid-Atlantic, swore in a group of future Sailors from the local recruiting district by having them raise their right hand and recite the oath of enlistment, marking their entrance into the U.S. Navy.

"I was told it wasn't going to be your typical swearing-in ceremony like they do at MEPS (Military Entrance Processing Station)," said Brittani Wright. "I was comfortable with the idea of doing it here at Navy Night, though."

After the events on the field took place, attendees were able to watch the game or visit various static displays in the stadium from Stewards of the Sea, Naval Information Forces and Naval Station Norfolk Morale, Welfare and Recreation.

"Tonight is a great night to communicate with as many people as possible about what the Navy is doing," said Lt. Cmdr. Paul Noel, a public affairs officer who represented Stewards of the Sea at Navy Night. "We're also talking to the community about what the Navy does to minimize the impact on the environment and marine animals."

With the Norfolk Tides scoring all five of their points within the first two innings, the team was able to limit the rivaling Durham Bulls to only four points throughout the nine innings, allowing the Tides to win 5-4.
