Sailors assigned to USS Constitution will participate in Portland Navy Week in Portland, ME, Aug 21-27.

Constitution Sailors will kick off their participation by educating the Pine Tree Council of the Boy Scouts about the Navy.

They will participate in two Science, Technology, Engineering and Math events as well as a Navy Day at Camp Sunshine. They are also scheduled to build a home with Habitat for Humanity.

"Bringing the history of Constitution and the Navy to the people of the United States is one of our primary missions," said Cmdr. Robert S. Gerosa, Jr., Constitution's 74th Commanding Officer. "It gives people an opportunity not only to hear about the history of Old Ironsides, but also to meet and interact with Sailors from their Navy."

Additionally, Sailors will perform a color guard detail at a Portland Sea Dogs game.

This is the sixth Navy Week that Constitution Sailors have participated in this year. They participated in similar activities in Mobile, Austin, Memphis, Spokane and Indianapolis Navy Weeks.

The primary purpose of the Navy Week program is to increase Navy awareness by presenting the Navy to Americans who live in cities that normally do not have a significant naval presence. Portland Navy Week will showcase the mission, capabilities and achievements of the U.S. Navy and provide residents the opportunity to meet Sailors firsthand.

Constitution is located in the Charlestown Navy Yard in Boston and is the world's oldest commissioned warship afloat. The ship welcomes more than 500,000 visitors a year.
