Ticonderoga-class, guided-missile cruiser USS Philippine Sea (CG 58) returned to Naval Station Mayport Aug. 19, following a seven-month deployment to the U.S. 5th and 6th Fleet areas of operation.

Deploying as part of the George H.W. Bush Carrier Strike Group (GHWBCSG), the crew conducted naval operations in the North Atlantic Ocean, Mediterranean Sea and Arabian Gulf.

"I'm proud of our Sailors and the professionalism they displayed throughout a very challenging deployment," said Capt. Peter Nilsen, the ship's commanding officer. "Every Sailor onboard made a huge contribution to the success of the mission. The crew has earned some much-deserved R&R!"

Nilsen relieved Capt. John R. Schmidt during the deployment. Philippine Sea served as the primary air defense commander for GHWBCSG, and the primary escort ship for the GHWBCSG flagship, USS George H. W. Bush (CVN 77).

Philippine Sea also provided protection and logistical support for GHWBCSG. They conducted maritime security operations and theater security cooperation activities with allies and partners to enhance regional security and stability. The Philippine Sea "Wardogs" contributed to the success of Operation Inherent Resolve as well the multinational exercise Saxon Warrior, an exercise between the United States and NATO allies.

While deployed, the crew visited ports in Greece, Bahrain, United Arab Emirates, Cyprus and the United Kingdom where they were able to experience local cultures and customs, and participate in community outreach activities and Navy Morale Welfare and Recreation (MWR) tours.

Throughout the seven-month deployment, 65 Sailors earned their Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist qualification and 13 officers earned their Surface Warfare Officer qualification.

Philippine Sea is homeported in Mayport, Florida and is part of the U.S. Navy's Atlantic Fleet.

GHWBCSG is comprised of the staff of CSG-2; aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77); the nine squadrons and staff of Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 8; Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 22 staff; guided-missile destroyers USS Mahan (DDG 72), USS Cole (DDG 67), USS Laboon (DDG 58) and USS Truxtun (DDG 103); and guided-missile cruisers USS Philippine Sea (CG 58) and USS Hue City (CG 66).
