Camp Lemonnier Post Office Prevents Delay

12 January 2017
A delay in outgoing mail from Camp Lemonnier was averted by quick action and proper foresight by installation logistics and post office leadership.
Camp Lemonnier logistics and post office leadership averted a delay in outgoing mail with quick action and proper foresight.

After a short delay in outgoing mail in August 2016, Logistics Department Officer-in-Charge Cmdr. James Hormozi challenged Chief Logistics Specialist Kamoru Tolani, a Reservist from San Diego serving as Camp Lemonnier's postal officer, to create a plan in the event a delay happens again.

"It is important that in the event a problem like the delay in mail arises, that we have a plan in place to fix it before bigger issues are created," said Hormozi. "I entrusted this task to Chief Tolani."

Tolani, in cooperation with Fleet Logistics Center Sigonella and Camp Lemonnier Air Operations, developed the plan to utilize military aircraft to get outgoing mail off Camp Lemonnier in the event of another delay.

On Nov. 23, 2016, Tolani's plan was tested. A delay occurred, springing Tolani's plan into action.

"From November 23 to December 10, we moved nearly 500 pieces of mail totaling around 14,000 pounds through military air," said Tolani.

Tolani's prompt action to enact his backup standard operating procedure (SOP) prevented what could have been a backlog of outgoing mail from Camp Lemonnier.

"The delay helped establish a contingency SOP which would not only prevent future delays, but help us ensure continuity of service to our customers," said Tolani.
