Naval Supply Systems Command (NAVSUP) Global Logistics Support (GLS) Commander Rear Adm. James McNeal hosted Navy enlisted aide regional training at his home onboard Naval Base Point Loma, Feb. 15.

The training was the third of a series of trainings designed to educate culinary specialist Navy enlisted aides, flag officers, flag officers' spouses, and members of front office staffs about the rules and regulations governing the proper utilization of enlisted aides who are part of flag officers' personal in-quarters staff.

The two previous trainings, conceived and initiated by NAVSUP Commander Rear Adm. Jonathan Yuen, were held in Washington, D.C., and Pearl Harbor, beginning spring 2016.

Enlisted aides have a time-honored tradition of serving military flag officers who, as part of their assigned job description, have the responsibility of hosting and entertaining official functions at their appointed military quarters on behalf of the United States, whether guests are international dignitaries or domestic constituents.

For the San Diego region, all three-star admirals as well as the regional commander rate enlisted aides as part of their personal in-quarters staff.

"Enlisted aide training is an excellent venue for our culinary specialist team to update commands on guidance and new developments," said Paul Brown, director of warfighter and family readiness for NAVSUP GLS. "This training supports flag and general officers who have enlisted aides, their spouses, and staffs. It is important for the program to function in accordance with all the considerations involved for flag officer staffs."

Department of Defense Instruction 1315.09, last updated March 6, 2015, is the governing authority for the proper utilization of enlisted aides on flag officers' staffs.

Senior Chief Culinary Specialist Curtis Addleman, enlisted aide instructor at the Joint Center for Culinary Excellence, teaches the enlisted aide curriculum. The curriculum covers topics such as the most recent updates to the governing DoD instruction; the relationship between the flag officer, flag aide and the enlisted aide; and collaboration with the flag officer spouse.

"This is the third time I've administered the enlisted aide regional training, and each time I do I learn something new about each geographical region and their specific hosting and entertaining requirements," said Addleman. "As a senior culinary specialist, it's been my pleasure to give back to the community I have grown up in and love."

NAVSUP GLS provides global logistics for a global Navy. The organization is made up of approximately 6,300 military and civilian logistics professionals operating from 105 locations worldwide, providing an extensive array of integrated global logistics and contracting services to Navy, Marine Corps, joint operational units, and allied forces across all warfare enterprises.
