The saying goes "lightning doesn't strike twice in the same place."

The team at Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Southeast doesn't hold to that saying as they collected the coveted 2016 Naval Air Station Jacksonville Captain's Cup trophy Feb. 15, again. It is the second consecutive year the NAVFAC team has claimed victory.

A large group of NAVFAC Southeast employees and military participants gathered outside the command's headquarters to celebrate the victory and the good health and camaraderie the Captain's Cup activities provide to the commands who participate.

The award is presented annually to the command which demonstrated the highest level of participation and achievement in the Captain's Cup Athletics Program during a calendar year. NAVFAC's point total for the competition was more than double its closest competitors, Fleet Readiness Center Southeast and Naval Hospital Jacksonville, accruing more than 1100 points to FRCSE's 522 and the hospital's 495.

"So you guys are two for two," said NAS Jacksonville Commanding Officer Capt. Sean Haley. "You all do a lot of sports! Seriously though, you all are to be commended for your efforts."

Captain's Cup sports consist of a variety of team and individual sporting events, leagues, and tournaments held throughout the year. While participating in Captain's Cup events, teams receive points for participation, as well as points for order of finish in each event. Those points are totaled at the end of the year, and the command with the most points overall claims the coveted Captain's Cup Championship Trophy.

Commands may enter as many teams or individuals in the events to earn Captain's Cup points for their command participating in the events. For team sports, points are awarded to the commands which finish first and second in the league and for finishing first, second, and third in the playoffs. For sports tournaments, commands earn additional points for finishing first, second, and third place.

NAVFAC Southeast Commanding Officer Capt. Pat Garin said when he was stationed here 25 years ago, Patrol Squadron (VP) 30 was always the champs.

"So I guess things have changed in 25 years, right? Two years in a row for us; that's awesome," said Garin.

"I want to thank everyone that participated in the calendar year 2016 Captain's Cup events and the supervisors who allowed it to happen," said NAVFAC Southeast Business Director Jeff Killian. "It is nice to win, but what we are really after is maximum participation and establishing a venue where we interact with each other in an activity other than work."

Killian also offered a special shoutout to NAVFAC Southeast Operations Production Controller Jason Bohrmann who has served as the local NAS Jacksonville sports coordinator for the command for two years.

"Without him managing the flow of paperwork required for Captain's Cup participation, ensuring we have sport commissioners for every sport, and that we attend all the organizational meetings, we would never have a chance to win," said Killian. "So, with that, I leave you with my annual plug. If you have been participating, then keep participating. If you haven't participated, then we would certainly like to see you start participating."

The following breakdown highlights NAVFAC Southeast's 2016 Captain's Cup accomplishments:

* First out of 42 commands which participated.

* Participated in 28 of 34 Captain's Cup events including: Ultimate Frisbee, Singles and Doubles Badminton, Dodgeball, Golf, Bowling, Intramural Softball, Sand Volleyball, Singles and Doubles Bean Bag Toss, Soccer, Intramural Trap, Racquetball, Wallyball, Intramural Basketball, Tennis, 4-on-4 Flag Football, 3-on-3 Basketball, Intramural Skeet, Indoor Volleyball, and several 5K Runs.

* NAVFAC took first place in Greybeard Basketball-Winter, Badminton Doubles, Intramural Bowling-Winter, Trap, Wallyball, and Intramural Skeet.

"Our quest for the three-peat for calendar year 2017 has begun. Will you accept the challenge?" asked Killian to the NAVFAC Southeast team.
