Ground breaking ceremonies were held at the Naval Air Station (NAS) Patuxent River Naval Exchange (NEX), Feb. 13, to formally commence construction on the first major renovation to the main store since it opened nearly 17 years ago.

"Renovations are in progress to help meet customer needs and offer more extensive products and services," said Kathlyn Daughrity, general manager of the Pax NEX. "The renovations will include an overall update to the current store, as well as a 28,000 square foot expansion."

In addition to expanding retail space, which will increase the size of the store by 50 percent, the scope of work also includes renovation to the services and administration areas, said Robert Cipolloni, Naval Facilities Engineering Command construction manager for the project.

Exterior building finishes will be in accordance with the Installation Design Guidance and supporting facilities include all required utilities, power, communications and alarms, pavement, curb and gutter, sidewalks, storm drainage and landscaping.

"There will be a renovated food court and an expanded and relocated garden area," Cipolloni added. "And proposed construction also develops an additional 200 patron surface parking stalls."

The renovation will enable the Pax NEX - with current annual sales of $23.5 million - to offer expanded products and services.

"Several departments will offer a more in-depth assortment to help meet customer needs," Daughrity said. "There will be a new layout and new checkouts to help service patrons. The recently completed salon/barber renovation is an example of how wonderful this renovation will be when finished."

The current store will remain open during construction of the $8 million-plus project, which is expected to be completed in April 2018.

"This is an exciting time for the Pax NEX," Daughrity added. "It's fantastic to be able to offer Pax River a great place to shop."
