A representative from the Food Bank of Northern Nevada (FBNN) joined the Naval Air Station Fallon (NASF) Commanding Officer, Capt. David Halloran, in recognizing 16 Sailors for their volunteer work, Feb 8.

Angie Medina, the volunteer coordinator at FBNN, recognized administration department Sailors who volunteered 3 hours of their day Jan. 26 to help sort and pack food at the local nonprofit organization.

"Everyone was really blown away by how efficient and professional these Sailors were," said Medina. "They helped sort through 10,000 pounds of food. It's significant because a normal group of 35 people tends to sort through 6,000 pounds in one session, and the 16 Sailors greatly exceeded that standard."

Medina mentioned the effort of the Fallon volunteers help return their operations to their normal schedule, which had fallen behind due to recent inclement weather which left volunteers unable to show up.

"You don't realize much food you've helped pack up until they told you," said Culinary Specialist 2nd Class Lawrence Gacad. "It really makes you feel good inside knowing that you've made such an impact on people in need."

According to their website, the FBNN over the last year provided 13.3 million meals to families through a network of more than 140 partner agencies in a 90,000 square mile service area throughout northern Nevada and the eastern slope of the Sierras in California.

"Thanks to all the volunteers," said Halloran. "It speaks volumes to our local community that you want to go out and help the public. It's the heart of our core values of honor, courage, and commitment to do for others."
