Service members, contractors, and military working dog "Doki" gathered to celebrate the ribbon cutting of what is now Camp Lemonnier's (CLDJ) first fully-equipped and operational veterinary clinic, Feb. 17.

The new facility consolidates veterinary services previously spread between three locations throughout CLDJ to include the previous veterinary office, mortuary affairs, and the Expeditionary Medical Facility.

CLDJ Executive Officer, Cmdr. William Moynahan, presided over the opening of the more than 600-square foot facility.

"The consolidation of veterinary resources will enhance response time and care given to our military working dogs, as well as services to the feral animal population who keep vermin in check," said Moynahan.

Veterinary Officer, Army Capt. Kelly Mallette, is trusted with the treatment of up to seven military working dogs at any given time.

"Now that this space is open, the majority of physical examinations, procedures, and diagnostics can be performed without ever leaving the military working dog compound," said Mallette.

The new facility serves not only CLDJ, but also U.S. military assets throughout the region.

"This is the most capable animal medical facility in all the Horn of Africa, and much of what you see inside was directly influenced by Army veterinarians Captain Ami Campbell and Captain Kelly Mallette," said Moynahan.
