Seaman Recruit Jacob Legumina, Division 085, graduated as the top Sailor from Recruit Training Command earning the Military Excellence Award, March 3.

Legumina, of Chandler, Arizona, joined the Navy to pursue a career in intelligence and cryptology, selecting the rating of cryptologic technician-networks (CTN). Prior to enlisting Jan. 5, he attended San Diego State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in sociology, Dec. 30.

After completion of boot camp and follow-on training, he plans to apply for Officer Candidate School (OCS) to become a naval officer.

The Navy Club of the United States Military Excellence Award is the top award presented to the number one recruit of his or her graduating training group. The MEA is awarded to the recruit who best exemplifies the qualities of enthusiasm, devotion to duty, military bearing, and teamwork. The award placed him at the pinnacle of today's newest Sailors. Legumina was awarded a flag letter of commendation.

"I was very surprised to learn I would be receiving the award," said Legumina. "I would like to thank my parents for keeping me focused and on track, ensuring that prior to boot camp I was physically and mentally prepared. Additionally, my success derives from the dedication of my lead recruit division commander, Petty Officer Duenas, for setting me up for success and mentoring me in board etiquette."
