A Center for Naval Aviation Technical Training Unit (CNATTU) North Island Sailor received the Harry T. Jenkins Memorial Award during the Coronado Chamber of Commerce's annual "Salute to the Military Ball" at the Hotel Del Coronado in Coronado, California, March 11.

Aviation Machinist's Mate 1st Class Kimmerly Ealum earned the award for her dedication to the Navy and Coronado community.

"I was humbled to be nominated and even more surprised I was selected," said Ealum. "There were nine nominees from various commands here in Coronado, and to be part of this group of outstanding service members is truly an honor."

Named for the late Capt. Harry T. Jenkins, the Coronado Chamber of Commerce presents the award annually to a Coronado-area Sailor who exemplifies honor, integrity, and commitment.

Jenkins served as a naval aviator during World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. Jenkins was held as a prisoner of war in north Vietnam after his aircraft was shot down, Nov. 13, 1965. He was held for more than seven years and released during Operation Homecoming in 1973. Jenkins retired from the Navy and later died in a crash of a home-built aircraft, Aug. 2, 1995.

Ealum, a Brooklyn, New York native, serves as the CNATTU North Island instructional systems design department leading petty officer, duty section leader, and Second Class Petty Officer Association mentor. She has volunteered for the San Diego Military Outreach Ministries and has organized four annual U.S. Postal Service Stamp Out Hunger food drives which collected nearly 170,000 pounds of food.

CNATTU North Island Commanding Officer Cmdr. Kenneth Sanchez said Ealum's efforts both to the command and her community is a testament to her character.

"Her continuous level of dedicated community service has set her apart from other nominees, earning her the honor of this prestigious award," said Sanchez. "Petty Officer Ealum continues to represent CNATTU North Island in the most professional manner."

CNATTU North Island is a training unit of the Center for Naval Aviation Technical Training located at Naval Air Station Pensacola. CNATT develops, delivers, and supports aviation technical training at 27 sites located throughout the continental United States and Japan.

CNATT is a technical training agent for the Naval Aviation Enterprise, an organization designed to advance and sustain naval aviation warfighting capabilities at an affordable cost, and is the largest training center under Naval Education and Training Command.
