13 September 2016
Foreign students from the Naval Education and Training Security Assistance Field Activity (NETSAFA) visited Training Service Center (TSC) Great Lakes and toured learning sites (LS) Sept 12.
Foreign students from the Naval Education and Training Security Assistance Field Activity (NETSAFA) visited Training Service Center (TSC) Great Lakes and toured learning sites (LS) Sept 12.

The visit began with a meeting with TSC's Commanding Officer Capt. John Vliet, and Executive Officer Cmdr. Kevin Halfacre.

"We are proud to give the foreign students the opportunity to observe the largest surface warfare technical training command in the entire U.S. Navy," Vliet said. "They got to see everything from a surface warfare perspective -- lighting off engines, engineering functionalities, combat systems, radar and weapons systems; as well as being introduced to the life-skills training that young Sailors receive when they first arrive at TSC."

The purpose of the visit was to demonstrate the training used at TSC and LSs that provides 24-hour supervision, leadership, training and professional development of accession Sailors prior to their arrival to the fleet. They also visited Recruit Training Command (RTC) to view how the Navy's only boot camp transforms civilians into basically trained Sailors.

At Center for Surface Combat Systems Unit (CSCSU), the Kazakhstan navy toured the Gunner's Mate "A" School's Fire Arms Training Simulator and the T1 Radar Partial Task Trainer.

"In my point of view, this visit was very educational and very important since our militaries work so closely together," said Col. Dony Rizal Lubis, Indonesia Ministry of Defense. "I can learn so many lessons from these field study programs; we can compare what we do in the field. It is a great idea to come together and work together."

At Surface Warfare Officers School Unit (SWOSU) Great Lakes, Executive Officer Lt. Cmdr. Preston Marshall and staff led a tour of the training facilities of Basic Engineering Common Core (BECC).

BECC balances Computer-Based Training (CBT) with hands-on training labs, instructor-led classroom training with realistic simulations creating an Integrated Learning Environment (ILE). They also visited the Purifier Lab, LPD 17 Maintainer Course, Engineman and Quartermaster Apprentice Schools.

"Our staff does amazing work every day and I am proud to show off their work along with the technology and training curriculum that makes SWOSU a top-notched training facility," Marshall said. "Partnering with foreign military personnel allows us to pass on lessons that we have learned, and allows for us to create forging bonds with our military partners."
