Sailors assigned to Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser USS Shiloh (CG 67) participated in a community relations (COMREL) event while in Singapore.

Sailors spent time at the Genesis School, which was founded to provide holistic, child-centered, family-oriented education to pre-school, kindergarten, and primary and secondary academic-level children with special learning needs.

The 10 Sailors who participated in the event spent time giving lessons in math, English, and other subjects. The Sailors also spent time getting to know the children and helping them develop study skills.

"It was a great opportunity for our sailors to interact with the kids and I would definitely recommend this community relations project to anyone in the future," said Lt. Robert Graham, a Reserve Navy chaplain assigned to Shiloh.

Graham helped organize several events and COMREL projects during his temporary active-duty time aboard.

"It was fun for the kids to learn from us ,and many of them were grateful to receive personal instruction and interaction," said Religious Program Specialist 2nd Class Sebastian Peralta, a native of Ephrata, Pennsylvania. "I definitely wasn't disappointed. I think we learned just as much from them as they did from us."

The event, called Project Handclasp, was organized to strengthen the relationship between the U.S. military and the civilian community in Singapore.

Shiloh is forward-deployed to Yokosuka, Japan, in support of security and stability in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region.
