Sailors assigned to Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser USS Chancellorsville (CG 62) participated in a community relations (COMREL) project at Harry S. Truman Elementary School, Sept. 26.

The team worked together to organize, clean and provide some heavy lifting around the school. Sailors also spent time interacting with children and assisting special needs children with a variety of classroom activities.

"We are so thankful for all your help here at Harry S. Truman Elementary School," said Doris White, a special education teacher at Truman Elementary. "When you come here, all the children smile. The work you did today is highly appreciated and we hope you have the time to see the beauty of Guam."

COMREL events give Sailors an opportunity to interact with the community while volunteering their time and efforts.

"To be able to come into a liberty port and see each Sailor take their time to help students and learn Chamorro culture really says a lot about the caliber of our Sailors," said Lt. Brandt Peacock, a Navy chaplain assigned to Chancellorsville. "While Guam is still in the United States, getting a real cultural experience really enriches us all and helps us get a greater appreciation for all the people in the world that we serve."

Sailors wishing to participate in upcoming COMRELs will have the opportunity in future ports during Chancellorsville's patrol.

Chancellorsville is on patrol with Carrier Strike Group (CSG) 5 supporting security and stability in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region.
