Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Barry (DDG 52) departed Guam after a scheduled port visit Sept. 29.

"I couldn't be more proud with the hard work and dedication our crew has demonstrated these past months since being forward-deployed to Japan," said Cmdr. Jennifer Eaton, Barry's commanding officer. "This beautiful island is a fitting and well-deserved stop for rest and relaxation for our Sailors."

While in Guam, Barry Sailors were able to experience the historic and cultural attractions on the island. Some crew members volunteered in a community relations (COMREL) project at a nearby school, interacting with elementary students.

"Being able to share a little of our time with the kids was a rewarding experience," said Seaman Patricia L. Cortes. "I've done many community relations events in the past, but this one was unique. The kids' joy in hearing our experiences was motivating."

Sailors had better access exploring the region with the help of the ship's Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR) committee, headed by Chief Petty Officer Juan V. Dominguez.

"A happy Sailor is a productive Sailor, and that is what the MWR team strives to achieve," said Dominguez. "This port was a great opportunity for our Sailors to experience the diversity and culture that Guam has to offer."

Since arriving in the 7th Fleet area of operations earlier this year, Barry has conducted several patrols throughout the area of responsibility. Barry's current patrol, with Carrier Strike Group (CSG) 5, included participation in the biennial U.S.-only joint exercise Valiant Shield 2016.

Barry is on patrol with CSG 5 in the Philippine Sea supporting security and stability in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region.
