Naval Station Guantanamo Bay returned to full operational capability Oct. 6, and offers sincerest condolences to those in Haiti and other areas affected by Hurricane Matthew.

Initial assessments of the installation found no significant damage, and no injuries were reported. Erosion was determined to be the most extensive issue along the beaches, including Ferry Landing.

Commanding Officer Captain David Culpepper's principal consideration remains the safety and well-being of all residents as the naval station returned to Condition of Readiness (COR) 5. Personnel sheltered at the station have returned home and are resuming their duties. Plans are being made for the return of family, friends, and colleagues.

Though the station was not significantly damaged, debris, deep water silting, and erosion are impediments to resuming normal operations. Landing craft utility (LCUs) are operating on the normal ferry schedule today, but vehicles are not permitted due to the sea state. Ferry services will not resume until the sea state allows safe transit.

The base's piers are able to accommodate ships, providing select services. The airfield has reopened and scheduled flights are recommencing. Friday's rotator was cancelled, and previously ticketed passengers will be rescheduled to Tuesday's flight.

Though business hours may be limited until all personnel return to the base, other facilities that have resumed normal service include Naval Hospital Guantanamo Bay, all galleys, Child
Development Center, Youth Center, Library, Downtown and Marine Hill Lyceums, Denich Fitness Center, Camp Bulkeley Gym, Windjammer, Pizza Hut, Bowling Alley, O'Kelly's, Triple C and the Jerk House.

Facilities remaining closed until further notice include the Windjammer Pool, Marine Hill Pool and Splash Pad, and Camp Bulkeley Lyceum.

Naval Station residents can monitor FM 102.1, FM 103.1, Channel 4 or the NAVSTA Facebook page for further information.
