Commanding Officer Capt. Kevin Bartoe presented 2017 Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Far East Engineer of the Year awards on board Commander, Fleet Activities Yokosuka, Japan, Nov. 8.

Lt. Cmdr. Cort Stringham, Mark Wentink and Harufumi Ebata were recognized as Military, U.S. Civil Service and Host Nation Engineers of the Year, respectively.

"This award recognizes their outstanding contributions to NAVFAC, their supported commands and the engineering profession," said Bartoe. "We are very fortunate to have so many experienced and talented engineers across our organization, planning, designing, executing and maintaining DoD facilities. Our awardees this year delivered facility engineering solutions to our supported commands and represent the 'Can-Do' spirit that is the foundation of NAVFAC."

Stringham executed numerous renovation projects for morale facilities and completed Navy Exchange renovations increasing retail space thereby dramatically improving quality of life and safety for service members and families stationed overseas. He served as the critical link between Commander Pacific Fleet, Commander, Naval Installations Command and the Republic of Singapore Navy, enabling the delivery of the $25 million Ship Sustainment Facility for the Littoral Combat Ship, two months ahead of schedule.

Wentink aggressively programmed Dry Dock 6 (DD6) repairs extending the life of this critical asset while maximizing essential support to U.S. 7th Fleet. His multi-disciplined team analyzed multiple repair alternatives, performed failure risk analysis, and optimized DD6 down time against predictive time to failure, and directly led to the successful programming of depot-level refurbishment of DD6 within a challenging 12 month window of availability.

Ebata led two efforts providing critical and timely support to 7th Fleet aircraft carriers. His 60hz Power Supply Study resulted in a $40 million project to provide long term, off-grid power within 30 seconds of an outage. His prompt response after a frequency converter electrical fire, and one week turn-around for the replacement project, stands as a strong testament to his technical expertise and vast knowledge of the Fleet Activities Yokosuka electrical infrastructure.
