U.S. Naval Computer and Telecommunications Station (NCTS) Far East gained recognition for outstanding community service when it was selected as a 2016 Navy Project Good Neighbor Community Service Flag Award winner Nov. 23.

NCTS Far East was one of eight commands Navywide selected for the award, which recognizes the best year-round volunteer supported program or special project that promotes outreach activities throughout the year to establish and restore hope to the community.

The command, selected as the winner in the Large Overseas Command category, garnered recognition for its numerous contributions to Shinsen Children's Home in the Kanto region of Japan. NCTS Far East Sailors provided property maintenance and upkeep services, and hosted numerous events for the Shinsen children and staff at Fleet Activities, Yokosuka throughout the year. These events include seasonal Friendship Days, annual Halloween trick-or-treating, Thanksgiving dinner, and NCTS Far East Children's Christmas.

NCTS Far East has sponsored the Shinsen Children's Home since 1998 and previously received the Zenkokai Award in 2000, 2013, and 2014. In May, NCTS Far East once more received recognition for contributions to the children's home at the Sanhusden Hall of Meiji Shrine in Tokyo.

The Zenkokai Award is presented to individuals or organizations which have made significant contributions toward the betterment of relationship and strong ties with Japan. The award is broken down into four categories including juvenile, emergency contributions, international contributions, and a special foreigners category. Founded in 1951, the nonprofit Zenkokai Association under control of the Cabinet Office of the government of Japan opened the prestigious award to foreigners in 1955 to recognize acts of good conduct in the local community.

NCTS Far East, located in Yokosuka, Japan, provides reliable and secure communications and information technology services to Navy and joint forces in the Far East region.
