Naval Air Station Patuxent River has completed its second year of the Energy Warrior Contest to promote energy usage reduction.

The contest encourages all employees to reduce and conserve energy consumption basewide in support of mission through utility cost savings.

The contest runs each year from Oct. 1 to Sept. 30, with various awards going to to the top three building energy monitors (BEMs) whose facilities showed energy reduction based on energy used between the previous and current fiscal years. The installation energy manager determines the top three facilities with the most reduction, based on amount of energy in million British Thermal Units (MBTU) reduced and the Energy Usage Index (EUI), which is a benchmark score based on the size of the building being monitored.

This year's winners will receive a letter of commendation from Capt. Scott Starkey, NAS Patuxent River commanding officer, and the BEM responsible for the winning facility will receive a command coin. The following buildings were the 2016 contest winners:

First place: Building 2060
BEM Paxton Gilliam
28.9 percent reduction

Second place: Building 2646
BEM, Lt. Cmdr. Daniel Immeker
5.4 percent reduction

Third place: Building 8312
BEM Tim Kinder
3.6 percent reduction

The basewide energy reduction for 2015-2016 was 9.26 percent, resulting in a EUI of 112.85 from the 2015 baseline of 124.38 with a 2.5 percent reduction per year goal.

The 3rd annual NAS Patuxent River Energy Warrior Contest is underway, from Oct. 1 to Sept. 30, 2017, with the same process for determining the top three facilities demonstrating the most energy reduction.

The prize is $15,000 of fiscal year 2018 ST funds for CNIC maintenance funded facilities only, and may be adjusted up or down based on actual available funds. All non-Commander, Navy Installations Command maintenance funded facilities in top three will receive letters of commendation.

This contest will be an annual occurrence with the intent of promoting energy conservation as a means to reduce utility costs and better utilize our resources in support of mission.
