Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Adm. John Richardson announced Navy Cargo Handling Battalion 1 as the CNO Shore Fleet Operations/Support winner for fiscal 2015, March 23.

The CNO shore safety award is given to those commands that have shown significant contributions to Navy safety and occupational health.

"These awards recognize outstanding support and achievement in safety and occupational health," said Richardson. "Winning commands excelled in directly supporting the Secretary of Defense 75 percent mishap reduction goal by reducing mishap trends and costs, and in demonstrating strong safety leadership."

The command-level award recognizes innovative and enthusiastic marketing of and promoting a superior level of safety culture within the command.

"NCHB 1's selection as the winner is a testament and tribute to the culture of safety within the command." said Lt. Gerald Henderson, NCHB 1 safety officer. "Each of our Sailors' active involvement and investment in the command safety program, from the top down, promotes a unique safety perspective and an enduring philosophy."

Henderson also said NCHB 1 safe execution of high-tempo operations during various mobilizations and training evolutions were a contributing factor in being selected for the award.

During 2015, NCHB 1 completed successful training evolutions and deployed hatch teams in support of Operation Deep Freeze 2015, Trident Arch 2015, Combined Joint Logistics Over the Shore 2015, Southern Partnership Station 2015, and Transportation Command Joint Task Force Port Opening 2015.

NCHB 1 supports Navy Expeditionary Logistics Support Group, a component of Navy Expeditionary Combat Command, which delivers expeditionary logistics capabilities with mobilization-ready Navy Reserve forces and active-duty Sailors. They provide a wide range of supply and transportation functions critical for peacekeeping, crisis response, humanitarian assistance, and combat service support missions.
