Logistics Specialist 1st Class Kimberly Castro, assigned to Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, was named Bureau of Medicine and Surgery's (BUMED) Enlisted Supply Technician of the Year.

The award recognizes and encourages notable contributions of BUMED medical members within the logistics community for their outstanding contribution. It is designed to recognize the achievements in support of an operational environment, medical activity, or specialty command. Nominees for this award are all logistics specialists E6 and below.

Chief Logistics Specialist Denis Guerrero said, "Castro is a phenomenal deckplate leader who has been the driving force in the success of the command's supply initiatives."

The award recognized Castro's accomplishments for 2015, which include: leading, guiding, and training 110 Sailors; supervising the management of 507 line items valued at more than $4.7 million; and being an active participant in countless command organizations and participating in volunteer events.

"I was very excited and shocked when I found out I won this award," said Castro. "I know I work hard and I work especially hard for my guys but I just didn't think that it was that noticeable because we are over here in a warehouse. I don't really think of awards like this when I perform my duties. When I'm here, I'm driven about my Sailors, I'm so focused on what they are doing and trying to make them better that I don't think about myself or winning awards."

Naval medical logistics personnel are responsible for planning, obtaining, and maintaining the required equipment, consumables, and services necessary for the effective and efficient delivery of health care support throughout the Navy and Marine Corps.

"Before I go to anyone I go straight to my LS1," said Logistics Specialist 2nd Class Jaqueline Malone. "She's definitely a role model and I always tell her I want to learn anything and everything that I can from her. She is more deserving than anybody of this award. She's about her business and that shouldn't go unnoticed."

Castro will be awarded for her accomplishments the first week of May during a BUMED conference in northern Virginia.

"I am humbled to be receiving this award, very humble and proud," Castro added.
