Navy Expeditionary Combat Command's (NECC) N6 department showcased their cutting-edge technology during a communications capabilities demonstration on the final day of the Defense Support of Civil Authorities (DSCA) staff exercise on board Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story, May 6.

The STAFFEX training was held in a Navy Expeditionary Combat Command Enterprise Tactical Command Control (NETC2) tent configuration, which is a tactical command control system incorporating laptops, monitors and radio communications in a scalable design that improves command and control capabilities for forces operating in the expeditionary environment.

Lt. Cmdr. Tim Carmon, NECC force communication officer discussed the unique capabilities of the NETC2 system, which is NECC's main command and control system.

"This system allows commanders to conduct mission sets that our expeditionary forces are engaged in that can vary from the austere environments with limited resources or outside support," said Carmon. "We were able to show the Informational Warfare stakeholders that we could conduct diversified missions such as direct combat operations, timely exchange of information with partner nations, and Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief."

A variety of stakeholders from Norfolk-based commands were invited to the capabilities demonstration hosted by NECC, Explosive Ordnance Disposal Group (EODGRU) 2 and Coastal Riverine Group (CRG) 2.

"This was a great opportunity to showcase to Norfolk-based commands all the great work that the expeditionary side of the Navy is doing every day," said Carmon. "Members of the information warfare community don't get many opportunities to see first-hand the cutting edge technology that the expeditionary community has to offer."

Capt. Mark Guzzo, NECC's N6 reflected on the diverse geographical operating environments expeditionary Sailors are deployed to and the need to leverage all types of communication to meet the variety of mission sets.

"Our forces communicate in diverse geographical operating environments, which include everything from small boats to operating small unmanned aircraft systems," said Guzzo. The man-portable communications offers an opportunity for expeditionary Sailors to leverage all types of communication to meet the mission.

Guzzo added that the capabilities demonstrated also served to educate civilians and military members who are now interested in joining our expeditionary communications team.

NECC is an enduring warfighting force providing sea-to-shore and inland operating environment capabilities across the full range of military operations that is focused on delivering combat effective expeditionary forces ready for worldwide operations now and into the future.
