The Shoguns of Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 9 held a change of command ceremony in the hangar bay of USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74), May 23.

With the officers and crew of CVW-9 assembled, Capt. Trey Sisson relieved Capt. Rich Brophy as commander, CVW-9.

In keeping with naval tradition, Sisson assumed command with the statement, "I relieve you, sir," and Brophy responded, "I stand relieved."

"I couldn't be more proud of CVW-9's Sailors over the past year and a half," said Brophy. "They completed an entire work-up cycle and now four months of deployment. They know and understand that our sacred duty is mission accomplishment. Their sacrifices show why naval aviation has made a difference in the world for over 100 years."

A native of Carmel, California, Brophy received his commission in 1991 from the United States Naval Academy. In 1994 he was designated a naval aviator.

Brophy's operational assignments include tours with Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 105 as a junior officer, and VFA-81 as both a weapons and tactics officer and department head. He commanded the Eagles of VFA-115.

He has completed deployments aboard USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71), USS Enterprise (CVN 65), USS George Washington (CVN 73), USS John F. Kennedy (CV 67), USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76), and is currently deployed on USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74).

Brophy has logged over 3,900 flight hours, and has accumulated over 1,000 carrier-arrested landings.

His shore assignments include VFA-106; aide/flag lieutenant to Commander, North American Aerospace Defense Command and United States Northern Command; executive assistant to OPNAV analysis and assessment division (N81); sea strike branch head (N81); and deputy executive assistant and special assistant to the Vice Chief of Naval Operations.

He is a graduate from the United States Navy fighter weapons school (Top Gun), the Naval War College where he earned a Master of Arts in National Security and Strategic Studies, and was a Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Seminar 21 fellow.

After assuming command Brophy led CVW-9 through a full pre-deployment work-up cycle, including multiple successful training detachments to Naval Air Station Fallon and embarkations upon John C. Stennis in preparation for their 2016 deployment.

Sisson, a native of Corvallis, Oregon, is a 1993 graduate of the University of Colorado. He was designated a naval aviator in 1996. He has been with CVW-9 since February 2015.

"It's been an honor serving with Capt. Brophy, first with VFA-115, and again in CVW-9," said Sisson. "He decisively led this air wing out of the lowest tier of readiness to become one of the most capable air wings in history. I am privileged to assume command of Team Shogun while at sea on USS John C. Stennis, where our dedicated Sailors are doing their part to make the world a better place."

CVW-9 is currently embarked aboard John C. Stennis on patrol in 7th Fleet providing a ready force supporting security and stability in the Indo-Asia-Pacific.

CVW-9 consists of Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron (HSM) 71, Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) 14, Fleet Logistics Combat Support Squadron (VRC) 30, Airborne Early Warning Squadron (VAW) 112, Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 133 and VFA 151, 97, 41 and 14.
