Naval Supply Systems Command (NAVSUP) Fleet Logistics Center Norfolk is supporting the ships that arrived for Fleet Week New York, May 25, arranging for a wide variety of husbanding services to the ships and their crews while in port.

According to Diane Krueger, supervisory contract specialist in NAVSUP FLC Norfolk's contracting department, the command arranges husbanding services for ships that pull into non-Navy ports on the east and west coasts of the United States, along with ports throughout the Caribbean, Central America, South America and Mexico.

"We provide a wide variety of services, such as trash and sewage removal, pilots and tugs, fresh water, bus service, vehicle rental and more," she explained.

She added that the first step is when the individual ships identify what services they will need for a port visit.

"That request is vetted through a Navy fleet logistics specialist, also known as a contracting officer's representative and then passed on to us for procurement," she said.

She explained that from there, the command contacts the husbanding service provider in that port for a quote, "at which point, we will issue an order to that vendor to provide the required services."

NAVSUP FLC Norfolk also provides an onsite contracting officer in New York during fleet week to work directly with the ships and husbanding service provider for any issue that may come up.

"Should additional husbanding support services be required during fleet week, I will work with all parties to get the required items at a fair and reasonable price and in accordance with the limitations of the contract," said Kate Petti, a NAVSUP FLC Norfolk senior contract specialist.

Krueger said she enjoys the challenge of supporting events like Fleet Week New York.

"To see cities welcome Navy Sailors with open arms is very rewarding and often taken for granted," she explained. "In addition, husbanding support services are extremely necessary for continuing a ship's mission and Sailor morale."
