Sailors aboard Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Curtis Wilbur (DDG 54) participated in a visit, board, search and seizure (VBSS) training exercise, June 8.

The evolution involved members of the VBSS team participating in rigid hull inflatable boat (RHIB) operations and tactical maneuvering throughout the ship.

Sonar Technician (Surface) 1st Class Timothy Soule, one of the VBSS team leaders, helped train Sailors to earn their qualifications.

"Every time you do training and learn something new, I think it's a successful evolution," said Soule.

This exercise, which must be completed every 6 months, requires the VBSS team to hook a ladder amidships to board the vessel and perform tactical movements to simulate taking control of the vessel.

Members were equipped with simulated versions of the M4 carbine rifle and M9 Beretta pistol during the training evolution.

For Cryptologic Technician (Technical) 2nd Class Jeffrey Moore, a prospective member of Curtis Wilbur's VBSS team, this was his first time participating in such an exercise.

"We received valuable training on the embarkation of a vessel and how to properly clear spaces," said Moore. "It was great to get the team together, and the RHIB ride was a lot of fun."

Curtis Wilbur is on patrol with Carrier Strike Group (CSG) 5 in the U.S. 7th Fleet area of responsibility supporting security and stability in the Indo-Asia-Pacific.
