Guided-missile destroyer USS Roosevelt (DDG 80) completed a port visit in Civitavecchia, Italy, June 21.

Roosevelt Sailors participated in several Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) tours to Rome and Florence during the four-day visit.

"It was great to experience the culture of the Italian people during our port visit," said Ensign Douglas White, Roosevelt's strike officer. "I have always wanted to visit Italy, and I feel like during our time here we were given the opportunity to immerse ourselves in the rich and storied history of Rome and Florence."

Roosevelt also hosted tours and a reception for members of the Italian Armed Forces, Rear Adm. Rick Williamson, commander, Navy Region Europe Africa Southwest Asia, and members of the U.S. Embassy staff. The reception, highlighting the Great Green Fleet, featured a static display of an MH-60R Seahawk helicopter assigned to Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron (HSM) 48.

Eisenhower Carrier Strike Group (Ike CSG) ships are the centerpiece of the Great Green Fleet initiative, which emphasizes use of energy conservation measures as a key combat enabler to allow ships to go farther, stay longer and deliver more combat capability.

Roosevelt, deployed as part of the Ike CSG, is conducting naval operations in the U.S. 6th Fleet area of operations in support of U.S. national security interests in Europe.

Ike CSG consists of aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69), Carrier Strike Group (CSG) 10 staff, the squadrons of Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 3, Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 26 staff, guided-missile cruisers USS San Jacinto (CG 56) and USS Monterey (CG 61) and guided-missile destroyers USS Stout (DDG 55), Roosevelt, USS Mason (DDG 87) and USS Nitze (DDG 94).
