23 June 2016
Naval Supply Systems Command (NAVSUP) Global Logistics Support (GLS) hosted personnel from around the Navy for the semiannual Hazardous Material Afloat Program (HMAP) Working Group, June 14-16 in San Diego.
Naval Supply Systems Command (NAVSUP) Global Logistics Support (GLS) hosted personnel from around the Navy for the semi-annual Hazardous Material Afloat Program (HMAP) Working Group, June 14-16 in San Diego, Calif.

The three-day workshop brought together representatives from area U.S. Navy ships, U.S. Pacific Fleet, U.S. Fleet Forces Command, Bureau of Medicine and Surgery (BUMED), U.S. Surface Forces Command, and NAVSUP Headquarters. The workshop provided a forum for the participants to discuss, coordinate and monitor the actions of NAVSUP, BUMED and other supporting commands whose actions are essential to the overall long-term shipboard hazardous material (HM) control and management program.

"Having participants from around the Navy attend the workshop ensured it was a resounding success," said Harry Ornelas, NAVSUP GLS logistics management program office. "HMAP is so important to our Navy that we hold the workshop twice a year, enabling face-to-face discussions to communicate and coordinate specific operational needs afloat."

Highlights of the workshop included reviewing the effectiveness of the Ship's Hazardous Material List (SHML); training for the afloat community to use toward division safety petty officer and HM coordinator quality assurance; discussing changes to and distribution of the Hazardous Inventory Control System for Windows (HICSWIN), which is used for HM tracking afloat; and finally, the training and assistance of the NAVSUP Fleet Logistics Centers Afloat Consolidated Hazardous Material Reutilization and Inventory Management Program Technicians (ACTs) in managing their shipboard HM programs, to include material offload for redistribution or disposal processing.

The HMAP Working Group format was established in 1986 to support fleet commanders with the effective management and control of HM aboard ships.

The next HMAP Working Group is slated for December.

NAVSUP GLS provides global logistics for a global Navy. The organization is made up of approximately 6,300 military and civilian logistics professionals operating from 105 locations worldwide, providing an extensive array of integrated global logistics and contracting services to Navy, Marine Corps, joint operational units, and allied forces across all warfare enterprises.
