Two staff members from Training Support Center (TSC) San Diego returned June 27 after competing in the 2016 Department of Defense Warrior Games in West Point, New York.

Lt. Cmdr. Maria Gomez-Mannix is the command antiterrorism officer and Electronics Technician First Class Scottie Smith is the assistant urinalysis program coordinator for learning sites at Naval Base San Diego, Naval Base Coronado, Naval Base Point Loma and Marine Corps Air Station Miramar.

This was Gomez-Mannix's second year competing in the games where she contended in the shot put, standing discus throw, air rifle shooting and sitting volleyball events. Most notably, she earned a silver medal in the standing shot put and a gold medal in the standing discus throw where she set a new record.

"With the support and enthusiasm of my teammates and coaches, I was able to set a new Warrior Games record in the women's standing discus throw," said Gomez-Mannix. "The camaraderie we have as warrior-athletes greatly helps us in our path to recovery."

The 2016 DoD Warrior Games was Smith's first time in an adaptive sports competition. He participated in the air pistol shooting and recurve archery events.

"Although the games were a lot of hard work, I felt it was worth it to be there and compete," said Smith. "I plan on trying out for the games again next year."

Smith highlighted that although it was a competition, the bigger reward was getting to meet other wounded warriors and learn from their experiences.

"Athletes competing in adaptive sports like this are an inspiration to everyone," said Capt. John D. Wilshusen, TSC San Diego commanding officer. "They are an exceptional group of warriors who proudly represent the armed forces, despite the personal obstacles they face on a daily basis."

The 2016 DoD Warrior Games, held June 15-21, is an adaptive sports competition for wounded, ill and injured service members and veterans. Approximately 250 athletes participated in eight sporting events, representing teams from the Army, Marine Corps, Navy/Coast Guard, Air Force, U.S. Special Operations Command and the United Kingdom Armed Forces.

TSC San Diego provides centralized student management and training support to 24 Naval Education and Training Command Learning Sites throughout the Pacific Rim.
