A Joint Base Charleston Sailor was recently awarded an academic scholarship from the Balfour Beatty Communities Foundation.

Hospital Corpsman 2nd Class Nicole Johnson, a general duty corpsman serving at Naval Health Clinic Charleston, was presented a check for $1,000 and an award certificate from JBC Deputy Commander Navy Capt. Timothy Sparks. She received the scholarship on behalf of the Balfour Beatty Communities Foundation July 1 at the JBC Balfour Beatty Community Center in Goose Creek, South Carolina.

Johnson, a Zephyrhills, Florida native and daughter of Sherryl Mahon and the late Robert Gregory, said she was full of gratitude when she accepted the scholarship.

"I am thankful for the honor of being selected and [am] grateful for any assistance toward my education," Johnson said.

The 2003 Zephyrhills High School graduate earned a Bachelor of Science in health science administration from George Washington University, based in Washington, D.C. She said she will use the scholarship to earn a Master of Science degree in health administration from the same university.

Johnson, inspired by her father's service in the Navy, enlisted in the Navy in 2011. She served in the Ambulatory Procedures Unit at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland until 2014. She then made a permanent change of duty station to NHCC, where she is the command career counselor. After earning her MHA, she aspires to be commissioned in the Navy's Medical Service Corps as a Health Care Administrator.

"She is hardworking and dedicated," Sparks said of Johnson as he presented her award. "We are proud to support her. We hope this financial assistance will help her fulfill her educational pursuits and continue to develop as a leader. We know she will have a great impact on our community."

The Balfour Beatty Communities Foundation awards numerous post-secondary scholarships annually to residents living in communities owned and managed by Balfour Beatty Communities. Scholarships are awarded based on review of the applicant's academic performance, financial need, community involvement, extra-curricular activities, and an essay that is evaluated based on originality and content.

Naval Health Clinic Charleston is located in the 188,000 square foot John G. Feder Joint Ambulatory Care Clinic located at Joint Base Charleston-Naval Weapons Station, Goose Creek, South Carolina. NHCC provides a wide range of services, including a National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) certified Medical Home Port program for Family Practice, Pediatrics and Internal Medicine patients; dermatology; ophthalmology; ambulatory non-interventional cardiology; physical therapy; optometry; and a wide variety of wellness programs for more than 17,000 service members, family members and veterans annually.
