A Sailor aboard guided-missile cruiser USS San Jacinto (CG 56) was selected as the recipient of the Navy and Marine Corps Leadership Award, July 6.

Senior Chief Operations Specialist Jamie Roseland, who serves as the Operations Department leading chief petty officer, earned the award after being nominated by her peers and voted on by the ship's Sailors.

"It is extremely humbling to be nominated for this award by Sailors with whom I work side-by-side," Roseland said. "I have the privilege of working with some of the very best chief petty officers in the Navy, whom I am inspired by each and every day. To be nominated by such an amazing group of leaders is truly awesome."

As the LCPO for Operations Department, Roseland is responsible for the development and growth of 98 Sailors across five divisions, including seven chief petty officers and four junior officers. In such a role, Roseland describes her leadership style as direct.

"I think my leadership style is straightforward -- no nonsense and by the book," explained Roseland. "I constantly strive to set the standards that I am charged to uphold, and I hold Sailors accountable for their actions."

As LCPO, Roseland works directly with most of her Sailors and realizes the need to be flexible as a leader.

"I am consistent," said Roseland. "Sailors know what to expect from me, but I also try to take each Sailor individually; not all Sailors respond to one style of leadership. You can elicit great productivity by just listening to Sailors."

Roseland attributes her style of leadership to her history as an enlisted Sailor.

"My experiences and examples of leadership throughout my career have helped mold my own leadership style," Roseland said. "Having a good moral compass, following regulations, being productive in your work center and setting the example is not bound by pay grade or time in rate."

Regardless of pay grade, Roseland's biggest hope for her Sailors is purpose.

"From the most junior Sailor to the commanding officer, every Sailor aboard San Jacinto is required to buy in and contribute to make this warship run," Roseland said. "I want my Sailors to understand how important they are to our mission and our success."

As San Jacinto continues on its deployment in support of Operation Inherent Resolve, accomplishing the mission is one of Roseland's biggest concerns, and she realizes her Sailors are the ones who will make it happen.

"It literally takes everyone here to achieve mission accomplishment," Roseland said. "Nothing is more personally or professionally demoralizing than believing that what you do doesn't matter. It all matters. I hope that I have helped them understand their purpose and to be proud of the work they do."

San Jacinto is deployed with the Eisenhower Carrier Strike Group (Ike CSG). Ike CSG is comprised of aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69), Carrier Strike Group (CSG) 10 staff, the squadrons and staff of CVW-3, Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 26 staff and accompanying ships guided-missile destroyers Stout, USS Roosevelt (DDG 80), USS Mason (DDG 87) and USS Nitze (DDG 94), and guided-missile cruisers San Jacinto and USS Monterey (CG 61).
