Guided-missile destroyer USS Gravely (DDG 107) held a change of command ceremony at Naval Station Norfolk July 15.

Cmdr. Ted Carlson assumed command of Gravely, relieving Cmdr. Alysa Ambrose.

"Under [Ambrose], Gravely has done exceptionally well" said Capt. Derek M. Lavan, commander, Destroyer Squadron 28. "Now, exceptional performance from the crew doesn't just happen; it requires leadership, vision, creativity, teamwork, and a lot of hard work and determination. Cmdr. Ambrose has provided all of these during her tour."

Ambrose served aboard Gravely for more than three years, assuming command in December 2014, and led the crew through its second deployment. While deployed, Gravely safely steamed over 55,000 nautical miles while fortifying relationships with allied nations and assuring maritime safety in the U.S. 5th and 6th fleet areas of responsibility.

Carlson, formerly the executive officer (XO) of Gravely, expressed his gratitude and excitement for assuming the title of commanding officer.

"Team Gravely, I'm truly honored and humbled to be your commanding officer," said Carlson. "Having served as your XO, I am aware of you dedication and professionalism, the sacrifices that you have made, and the conditions you have endured to support and defend our great nation. I know in the months ahead we will accomplish greater feats and continue to bring great honor to the Gravely name."

Gravely is currently in a sustainment cycle in preparation for an upcoming maintenance period.
