29 July 2016
Training Support Center (TSC) awarded its selections of Senior Sailor of the Quarter (SSOQ), Junior Sailor of the Quarter (JSOQ), and Instructor of the Quarter (IOQ), for the 3rd quarter during a ceremony, July 28.
Training Support Center (TSC) awarded its selections of Senior Sailor of the Quarter (SSOQ), Junior Sailor of the Quarter (JSOQ), and Instructor of the Quarter (IOQ), for the 3rd quarter during a ceremony, July 28.

The SOQs include: Navy Military Training Instructor (NMTI) Gas Turbine System Technician (Mechanical) 1st Class April Byun, selected as senior; and Religious Program Specialist 2nd Class Kory Hill, selected as junior. NMTI Fire Controlman 1st Class Juan Vargas was named IOQ.

"The staff of TSC Great Lakes, military and civilian, continues to impress me with their engaging contributions to ensuring our Sailors reach their full potential," said TSC Command Master Chief Jeffery Kirby. "The examples of professionalism that each of them set and achieve while training our 21st Century Sailors -- essentially our reliefs in the world's greatest Navy -- is inspiring."

Byun, is an assistant leading petty officer (LPO) for USS Farragut (barracks), provided training and mentorship to 268 apprentice-level Sailors resulting in six distinguished military graduates, 10 honor graduates, 12 accelerated advancements, and five meritorious advancements during the 3rd quarter.

"It is an honor being recognized for my dedication and hard work that I put in to train Sailors," she said. "I hope that the work that I do contributes to them being successful out in the fleet, or, motivates them to strive to be SOQ."

Additionally, Byun was an intervention training facilitator, providing training to more than a 100 Sailors in support of the Navy's fight against sexual assault.

While serving as LPO for the Chaplain Department, Hill provided logistical and administrative support to five chaplains in the execution of 350 counseling's, and guided eight student assistants and 40 Bluejacket Choir members. Additionally, he provided suicide prevention training to more than 4,000 students.

"The Sailors working at TSC are all top caliber," he said. "All of us represented different departments resulting in a group of Sailors that have a wealth of experience in various disciplines. We care deeply about the Navy and try our best to ensure a lasting positive impact is left on the Sailors coming through TSC."

Vargas, is an instructor at student indoctrination, Navy Operational Fitness and Fueling Series facilitator, and is master training specialist (MTS) qualified. During the 3rd quarter he has trained 260 students as a LifeSkills instructor, coached 300 new accession Sailors promoting the importance of physical fitness, and assisted four staff members in becoming MTS qualified.

"I like being one of the first people students encounter out of boot camp," he said. "Whereas a recruit division commander (RDC) trains recruits to transition from a civilian in boot camp, I work to train Sailors how to conduct themselves the right way and instruct them of what could happen if they choose not to. I like having that influence on the students especially at this time in their career. It makes me feel good when I see them advance."
