Sailors at Naval Submarine Base (NSB) Kings Bay, Georgia were surprised to see a film crew at the galley Aug. 2, filming clips to educate Sailors on the advantages of maintaining a healthy lifestyle whether exercising or making smart decisions using the Go for Green (G4G) System.

G4G is a at-a-glance food identification system which allows service members to identify food and beverage choices. Color-coded cards indicate if food and beverages should be consumed often (green card), occasionally (yellow card), or rarely (red card). The cards also provide a sodium code for additional information and assist members in selecting foods that can enhance their physical readiness.

Naval Supply Systems Command (NAVSUP) Dietician Jennifer Person-Whippo and members of NAVSUP Fleet Logistics Center (FLC) Jacksonville Navy Food Management Team were on site to ensure the video captured the message of promoting healthy choices.

"G4G allows Sailors to choose healthy options at each meal," said Person-Whippo. "It's part of the whole healthy lifestyle package."

Navy galleys are doing their part in helping service members make healthier choices by using fresh vegetables, fruit, and lean proteins.

"Bottom line, this program will enable Sailors and Marines to make better choices at each meal while going through the food line," said Lt. Paul Chapman, NSB Kings Bay food service officer. "It all comes down to selection, motivation, and knowledge, coupled with consistent choices to make behavioral changes for a healthy lifestyle."

Local Sailors participated in the filming. They started the day with physical training in the Georgia sun and stayed hydrated with water as opposed to sugary sport drinks. Next, the film crew moved to the base galley where they were able to film culinary specialists preparing lean meat and fresh vegetables for lunch, including grilled chicken and beef for fajitas that were topped with freshly-made pico de gallo and guacamole.

G4G, a registered trademark, is an innovative color-coded system to help service members make nutritional decisions without having to analyze food labels. It's a quick an easy way to make better food choices, which contributes to a healthy lifestyle. For more information on G4G go to http://hprc-online.org/nutrition/go-for-green/.
