Sailors from Naval Auxiliary Landing Field Fentress participated in a community relations (COMREL) project at a local church and preschool, Aug. 25.

As part of the project they assisted with the upkeep and maintenance of Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church and Mount Pleasant Methodist Preschool, mowing the lawn at the preschool's playground and replacing the mulch at both locations.

NALF Sailors have a longstanding relationship with the church and preschool. This year they continued an annual tradition of enriching the lives of the local community.

"I have worked at the preschool here for almost 30 years now," said Linda Lawrence, the director of the school. "The Sailors are always here to help if we need it."

In addition to assisting with landscaping, NALF Sailors hosted a cookout and interactive demonstrations for the 22 students at Mount Pleasant.

"It is always a great opportunity to give back to the community," said Interior Communications Electrician 1st Class Jeramy Goodlin, NALF Fentress assistant leading petty officer. "It helps to build a sense of ownership in the community, and that means people are more likely to help take care of each other."

Fentress Sailors said they are not only working in the community, but are fostering an environment of learning for the children of Mount Pleasant as well.

"I grew up in a timeframe when everyone watched out for each other's kids," said Goodlin. "So being able to do something meaningful for the kids in this area is definitely worthwhile."

COMRELs provide service members a way to give back to the community and form a positive, lasting relationship with the locals.

"It is great to know that I can call on the Navy to help us out if we need it," said Lawrence. "These Sailors provide our children with positive role models."
