Navy Region Northwest (NRNW) held a graduation ceremony for students enrolled in their fiscal year 2016 Emerging Leaders Program (ELP), Aug. 24.

ELP, aligned with the Department of Defense Leader Development Continuum is a one-year, cohort based program that targets development of aspiring leaders within the organization using an integrated approach to development through assessments, experiential learning, and individual development opportunities, according to the program brochure.

The ceremony opened with remarks from Commander, Navy Region Northwest (CNRNW) Capt. William Bulis.

"Listen to what your people have to say," said Bulis. "You will gain a lot in leadership by watching and listening to your people as they share what they want to do."

All NRNW military, civilian appropriated fund and non-appropriated fund personnel are eligible to apply to the program. Yeoman 2nd Class Joseph Straight, from Southborough, Massachusetts, and stationed with NRNW was the only service member to graduate this year and second to go through the leadership course.

"When I first enrolled, my expectation was that the program would help me improve my presentation skills and confidence in public speaking," said Straight. "The program exceeded my expectations. It has helped me identify my strengths as a leader, how to overcome my fears of public speaking, and has given me the tools to advance my career."

A group of 11 NRNW personnel met monthly to collaborate and present what they learned about conflict resolution, how to identify common leadership styles and personalities, and also to develop their own personal leadership skills along the way, according to Straight.

"We always encourage military to participate, but mostly what makes a difference is how much each person, military or civilian, grows through this process," said Vicky Bailey, NRNW Workforce Development specialist and head of NRNW ELP. "YN2 Straight had and will continue to have great growth, which will benefit Sailors and civilians in and around him."

Members from around NRNW, from emergency services personnel to legal and Morale, Welfare, and Recreation participated in ELP to grow their leadership skills.

"I recommend it to anyone," said Straight. "Whether in senior leadership, a new region employee, or junior Sailor, anyone can benefit from this program."

This was the 5th consecutive year NRNW has facilitated ELP for personnel.
