USS San Jacinto Underway on Time After Storm Thanks to MARMC Support

Sailors and civilians at Mid-Atlantic Regional Maintenance Center's (MARMC) Production Department made emergency weekend repairs to USS San Jacinto (CG 56) during Winter Storm Jonas that allowed it to head to sea as scheduled from Naval Station Norfolk, Jan. 25.

MARMC Planning Branch Manager Lloyd Allen received a call on Jan. 23 that San Jacinto was losing hydraulic fluid in one of its controllable reversible pitch pipes, which would have prevented her departing for a scheduled time at sea. With light snow on the ground Jan. 23, and more predicted that evening, the situation created more than the usual challenge for an emergent repair.

"I had my guys go down to the ship and conduct a ship check so that we could get the proper scope of work in order to plan and write a work package for the job," said Allen.

MARMC's Engineering, Quality Assurance, Non-Destructive Testing, Planning, Tag Out and Hull Branch had the parts and people to complete the repair quickly.

"The pipe that needed repairing was located in a tight space but the [crew] was able to remove the pipe and bring it into our weld shop where our welders could make the necessary repairs," said MARMC Planner and Estimator William Riley. "Thankfully, we had the materials needed to make the repairs so everything really fell into place with this job."

Snow from the winter storm didn't slow down the MARMC crew's effort from getting the job done.

"We were dealing with a pretty tight timeline to begin with," said Allen. "Then, we had to consider that weather conditions over the weekend brought snow and ice. Everyone involved with this job came in despite the conditions, on their off days, and worked hard to get this ship out on time."

"BZ [Bravo Zulu] to Adam Neithercut [port engineer], Jerry Cockran [project manager], MARMC Engineering Hydraulics and Ship Controls Branch [Stephanie Hansen] and the MARMC Production Department for your steadfast dedication and professionalism to ensure USS San Jacinto met her mission," said Commander, Naval Surface Forces, Atlantic Fleet Adm. Christopher Grady.
