A ribbon-cutting ceremony at Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Camp Pendleton celebrated the completion of a new hangar for Marine Corps MV-22 Osprey aircraft, Jan. 14.

The official party consisted of Marine Corps Installation West (MCI) and Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton Commanding General Brig. Gen. Edward D. Banta, MCAS Camp Pendleton Commanding Officer Col. Ian R. Clark, Marine Air Group (MAG) 39 Commanding Officer Col. Michael Borgschulte, NAVFAC Southwest Assistant Operations Officer Cmdr. James Alger, NAVFAC Southwest Public Works Officer (PWO) for MCAS Camp Pendleton Lt. Cmdr. Davis Closas, NAVFAC Southwest FEAD Director for MCAS Camp Pendleton Lt. Hendrik Schoeman, and Balfour Beatty Construction Senior Vice President Sumeet Gadi.

The new double hangar will hold six Ospreys from Marine Aircraft Group 39 of I Marine Expeditionary Force.

The 123,451-square-foot facility was completed in 21 months and showcases many environmentally conscious and energy-saving features such as a photo-voltaic parking structure, 100 percent backup emergency generator power, and skylights in hangar bays.

"The parking structure that we built has solar panels that provide 30 percent of the energy to the facility," said Closas. "Another innovative feature we have is the cool roof system, which provides less energy consumption during the summer."

The hangar project was completed with zero safety mishaps and environmental violations, and is designed to obtain a LEED Silver rating.

The new hangar will allow MCI West to better house and service aircraft from 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing's fleet.

NAVFAC Southwest was the manager of the construction project.
