Fellowship Hall was filled with the Sailors and civilians of Training Support Center (TSC) Great Lakes as the command celebrated Black History Month during an observance and pot luck lunch, Feb. 17.

"Black history month is really a reminder that this important part of our heritage belongs in the forefront of our consciousness 365 days a year," said Sharetta McGhee, a management technician with TSC and current civilian of the year for the command who spoke during the ceremony. "Black history is an American history and we owe it to ourselves and those who will follow in our footsteps to learn about those black Americans who not only made history but laid the foundation for diversity, pride and professionalism in today's society."

Master Chief Fire Controlman (SW/AW) Mark Gilling also spoke during the event and highlighted the important contributions African Americans have made to American society. From Crispus Attucks to Frederick McKinley Jones, Gilling highlighted how these men and women helped shape American society.

"It's a good idea to learn about African American history, which is actually American history," said Gilling, who is the master chief in charge of training for TSC. "These are great Americans, great inventors who happened to be black."

Following the speeches, Sailors and civilians from TSC enjoyed a pot luck style luncheon where they were encouraged to speak with other members of the command they may not see on a daily basis.

"Use this celebration to appreciate other people and cultures," said Cmdr. Kathleen Milligan, executive officer, TSC. "Talk to your shipmates and learn something about them."
