Arlington Departs Abu Dhabi

25 February 2016
Amphibious transport dock ship USS Arlington (LPD 24) completed a scheduled port visit to Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE), Feb. 13.
Amphibious transport dock ship USS Arlington (LPD 24) completed a scheduled port visit to Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE), Feb. 13.

The port visit comes during Arlington's maiden deployment which saw the ship, and its Sailors and Marines, operate in the U.S. 5th and 6th Fleet areas of operation.

"Though the United States Navy routinely visits the port of Jebel Ali near Dubai, it is wonderful to have the opportunity to visit the beautiful city of Abu Dhabi," said Commanding Officer Capt. Sean Bailey. "The modern facilities and the excellent liberty make this a great liberty port for the Navy, and Arlington was honored to visit here."

Taking advantage of the opportunity to relax, the crew enjoyed multiple cultural events and scenic tours sponsored by the ship's Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) Program. The tours included options to visit the Ferrari World Indoor Theme Park, the Yas Island Water Park, and a safari through the desert.

"Going to Ferrari World and riding one of the world's fastest roller coasters was one of the most exhilarating experiences of my life," said Fire Controlman 2nd Class Joshua Toohey. "It was one of those once-in-a-lifetime experiences."

Other Sailors took the opportunity to enjoy some liberty time in the sand during the MWR-sponsored Sunset Safari tour that consisted of off-road riding through sand dunes, wind boarding, camel rides and a barbecue buffet.

"I decided to go on the Sunset Safari tour because of how exciting it sounded," said Information Systems Technician 2nd Class Jacky Mayaen. "The food was delicious and the ride through the sand dunes definitely got the adrenaline pumping. It was absolutely worth going."

Arlington is part of the Kearsarge Amphibious Ready Group and, with the embarked 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit, is deployed in support of maritime security operations and theater security cooperation efforts in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations.
