USS George H.W. Bush's (CVN 77) American Diversity Heritage Observance Committee (ADHOC) and its crew celebrated National Black History Month on the ship's foc'sle, Feb. 29.

"National African American History Month is an annual celebration of achievements made by African Americans," said Lt. Daniel Madanat, the event's master of ceremonies. "It's also a time for recognizing the central role they have played in the history of the United States."

The Committee's presentation extolled the importance the civil rights movement and highlighted major figures and events from the period for the audience of Sailors.

Capt. Will Pennington, commanding officer of CVN 77, opened the ceremony speaking on the importance of the military as part of the melting pot of America.

"There is no greater place to experience the unique nature of the ever-evolving melting pot, than within our military," Pennington said. "Within a single year aboard George H.W. Bush, a crew member is exposed to more cultures, beliefs and ethnic backgrounds than most people will see in their entire lives."

He stressed the importance of recognizing the achievements of those with African American heritage.

"Taking time to celebrate the achievements of Black Americans throughout our history, helps us to better understand and appreciate the great influence they have had and continue to have, on our American culture," said Pennington.

The event celebrated a multitude of topics such as the progression of black education, unknown and known civil rights activists, and the founding of Black History Month.

"It is critically important to renew and strengthen the understanding of the progress and impact that the civil rights movement had," Pennington said. "It was not only a victory for African Americans, but for America as a whole."

The ADHOC event finished off with a cake cutting and refreshments.

George H.W. Bush is currently undergoing maintenance during a planned incremental availability at Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth.
