Naval Supply Systems Command Fleet Logistics Center (NAVSUP FLC) Puget Sound officially assumed administrative control of the Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Northwest Shop Stores facility in a ceremony Oct. 8, at Naval Base Kitsap-Bremerton.

Shop Stores is a former NAVFAC Northwest supply facility now managed and operated by NAVSUP FLC Puget Sound. The facility's mission is to provide logistics support to the NAVFAC Northwest Production Shop. Shop Stores personnel procure, manage and issue an array of supplies and materials NAVFAC Northwest personnel use for maintenance and repair projects around the installation.

According to Capt. Mark Geronime, NAVFAC Northwest commanding officer, officials at the two commands developed the idea for Shop Stores in an effort to improve and standardize supply chain and inventory management. Moving the responsibility for ordering, receiving, storing and issuing supplies for facilities engineering projects from NAVFAC Northwest to the logisticians at NAVSUP FLC Puget Sound was considered a 'best practice' that will provide for a more consistent approach to managing the supply chain.

"The evolution of several agreements ultimately led to this step in improving NAVFAC Northwest's supply chain performance and inventory management." said Capt. Tim Jett, NAVSUP FLC Puget Sound commanding officer. "All in all, this was a superb example of pooling our resources and establishing a strong foundation that we can build on for years to come. It's a huge step in the right direction in terms of supporting our customers."

During the project, a combined team of NAVSUP FLC Puget Sound and NAVFAC Northwest personnel inventoried and organized more than 2,700 line items. Each item was entered into an asset management database to allow Shop Store staff to track ordering and utilization. The group also identified and disposed of unnecessary inventory items to maximize storage space and minimize costs. Pooling resources not only benefited the commands involved, but also paid off in terms of customer service.

"It's been a real team effort. This facility will enable NAVFAC Northwest to provide superior service to its supported commands," said Trina McLeod, Shop Stores Project Manager.

Bremerton is the first Shop Stores facility in the region to move under the management of FLC Puget Sound logisticians. NAVSUP FLC Puget Sound and NAVFAC Northwest are collaborating to develop another shop stores project in support of NAVFAC activities at Naval Station Everett.
