Recruit Training Command (RTC) held a birthday celebration at Recruit Memorial Chapel in a celebration commemorating the 240th birthday of the U.S. Navy, Oct.13.

In attendance were Capt. Doug Pfeifle, commanding officer, RTC; Cmdr. Rich Huth, executive officer, RTC and Master Chief Matt Laing, command master chief, RTC, along with RTC staff members and civilians.

Each year, U.S. Navy commands across the world celebrate the birth of the Navy when, on Oct. 13, 1775, the Continental Congress approved legislation for two vessels to be equipped and armed with 10 carriage guns as well as crews of 80 Sailors charged with intercepting transport ships carrying munitions and stores to the British army in America.

This year's theme is, "Ready Then, Ready Now, Ready Always." Pfeifle was the guest speaker and reminded those in attendance of the importance of this annual recognition.

"October 13 is the day we recognize and celebrate the birthday of America's Navy, 240 years of service to our great nation, and to the cause of freedom," said Pfeifle. "It is the day we honor the multitude of men and women who have chosen to proudly wear the Navy uniform, active or reserve, as well as civilians, during times of war, and during times of peace. America's Navy has been defending and protecting America on the world's oceans since 1775. For 240 years, we have been there when it mattered, where it mattered, around the world, around the clock."

Master of Ceremonies Lt. Allen Rotert, ship's officer, USS Marvin G. Shields, RTC, read the Chief of Naval Operations' Birthday Message to the crowd followed by a bell ringing to commemorate the celebration.

The ceremony concluded with a customary cake cutting by Pfeifle, the senior officer and the youngest Sailor at RTC, Airman John Allred who was born July 1997 and joined the Navy in July 2015.

"It's a real honor to be able to come here today and be a part of such an important ceremony in the Navy's history," said Allred.

The first piece of cake was passed from Pfeifle to Allred, signifying the passing of experience and knowledge to the youth of the Navy.

"In a word, we were, are now and always will be ready. When America has called, the Navy has always answered," said Pfeifle.
