Sailors forward deployed to Misawa Air Base, Japan, celebrated the U.S. Navy's 240th Birthday at the Officer's Club, Oct. 16.

Capt. Keith Henry, commanding officer, Naval Air Facility (NAF) Misawa, and Rear Adm. Tomohiko Madono of the Japanese Self-Defense Force were the guest speakers for the officer and enlisted Navy Balls, respectively.

"It is a great honor and privilege to be able to celebrate the U.S. Navy's birthday alongside our allies and friends," said Madono. "Ever since I was commissioned 26 years ago, the United States Navy has been my friend and comrade."

The admiral highlighted the positive effect that the U.S. Navy has had in Misawa, and how he hopes to maintain our great relationship for many years to come.

After his speech, Madono was presented with a friendship plaque by NAF Misawa.

To close the ceremony the oldest and youngest Sailors in attendance came forward to cut the Navy birthday cake, as is tradition.

"This is a day to be proud," added Henry. "Be proud of your naval history. Be proud of what you're a part of. This day is for you, so let's celebrate it."
